Game 2: Boston Celtics 96, Chicago Bulls 80
(Leading Scorers: Bulls-Derrick Rose 18; Celtics-Kevin Garnett 18)

Game 3: Chicago Bulls 96, Memphis Grizzles 86
(Leading Scorers: Bulls-Derrick Rose 26; Grizzles-Rudy Gay 20)

The Chicago Bulls are now 2-1 on the season and are also 2-0 at home at the United Center. The team defeated the likes of the Milwaukee Bucks and the Memphis Grizzlies while they lost to the likes of the defending champion-Boston Celtics.

In his first three games this season Derrick Rose is averaging 18.3 points per contest as he dropped 11, 18, and 26 in them three contests. Also, Rose is shooting 20-of-43 from the field and is 15-of-17 from the free throw line. He has averaged 32.7 minutes per contest. Tonight, Derrick Rose will look to lead the Bulls to Orlando for a meeting with the 1-2 Orlando Magic.

Game 1 Recap: Deng Leads Bulls to 108-95 Win in Opener; Rose Impresses

One thought crossed Derrick Rose's mind as he lined up in the tunnel for his pregame introduction: Don't trip.

The rookie made it through just fine, although his on-court debut was an up-and-down affair.

While Rose elicited oohs, aahs and groans, Luol Deng and Ben Gordon provided enough big shots to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 108-95 victory over former coach Scott Skiles and the Milwaukee Bucks in the season opener Tuesday.

Deng scored 21 points and Gordon added 18 to offset Michael Redd's 30. The attention centered on Rose, the No. 1 draft pick and Chicago native, and it took him awhile to calm down.

He led Memphis to the NCAA championship game, but this?

"It's way more intense," he said. "I'm playing in an NBA game in my hometown. I don't know if it can get any better."

Rose wowed fans with his quickness and strength but mixed in enough mistakes to remind them he is a work in progress. He finished with 11 points, nine assists and four turnovers.

Rose had help, with six Bulls scoring in double figures.

Deng shot 8-for-13 after signing a six-year contract in the offseason, and Gordon scored 10 in the fourth quarter.

Watching from the visitors sideline was Skiles, who led Chicago to three straight playoffs but was fired in December following a slow start. The Bucks jumped at the chance to hire the coach after going 26-56 last season, signing him to a four-year deal in April with the hope that he could inject the tough defense and unselfish play that characterized the Bulls before their collapse. But there is clearly work to do.

The Bucks went 1-7 in the preseason, capping it with a loss at the United Center last week. This one counted, but the result was no better.

Redd dominated after winning a gold medal with Team USA at the Olympics but it was a rough night for Richard Jefferson. Acquired in a trade with New Jersey, he scored 15 points but hit just five of 17 shots.

The Bulls were trailing 73-72 late in the third quarter when Deng hit a jumper from the top and a running bank shot. After two free throws by Redd, Kirk Hinrich hit a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left to make it 82-75.

Gordon then started the fourth with a 3 that made it a 10-point game, and Chicago maintained control the rest of the way.

Hinrich scored 15 points in a reserve role, while Tyrus Thomas added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Rose, who led Memphis to the NCAA championship game in his lone college season, was just a bit nervous before the game, his mind racing as he waited for the public address announcer to call his name.

Rose cut through the smoke and the crowd erupted in a loud roar as he made his way onto the court. Then, reality delivered a hard smack.

Seconds into the game, Redd picked off a pass and scored on a fadeaway, and a collective shiver went through the crowd just over a minute later. Rose, who left the preseason finale against Milwaukee with a minor hip injury, clutched his left thigh after being fouled. He hit one of two free throws and eased any concerns moments later when he cut around two defenders for a transition layup.

At times, he looked like a star. Other times, he looked like a rookie -- albeit a promising one.

The Bulls are looking for Rose to lead them out of the mess they created last season, when they went from 49 wins to 49 losses while bickering with each other and the coaches. They took the hometown product over Michael Beasley and gave him the keys to their offense.

The Bulls now will take there 1-0 record on the road where they will play the Boston Celtics on Halloween night. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. Central Time and be televised on ESPN.

Game 1 Preview: Chicago Bulls (0-0) vs. Milwaukee Bucks (0-0): 10/28

The Chicago Bulls endured a disappointing 2007-08, but an offseason filled with excitement -- and the selection of a local product as the No. 1 pick in the draft -- followed.

On Tuesday, the Bulls will try to carry that excitement over into the new regular season.

Chicago native Derrick Rose is set to make his Bulls debut in the season opener at the United Center against the new-look Milwaukee Bucks, led by former Bulls coach Scott Skiles.

After finishing with the third-best record in the Eastern Conference in 2006-07, Chicago had high expectations for last season. However, it finished 33-49 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2003-04.

Interim coach Jim Boylan was not retained, leaving Bulls general manager John Paxson in search of a new coach shortly after the regular season. The eventual hiring of first-year coach Vinny Del Negro out of Phoenix's front office turned out to be just one of two big offseason decisions.

On May 20, Chicago hit the NBA draft lottery jackpot despite 1.7 percent odds. Just over a month later, the Bulls selected Rose, who went to high school on Chicago's South Side, over Kansas State forward Michael Beasley with the top overall selection.

Chicago had witnessed what talented young point guards like New Orleans' Chris Paul and Utah's Deron Williams can accomplish, and felt it could not pass up on Rose, who led Memphis to the NCAA championship game in his lone college season.

Rose will try to improve an offense that finished last in the league in field goal shooting (43.5 percent) and 18th in scoring (97.3 points per game) in 2007-08.

Rose seemed plenty comfortable in the preseason, averaging 13.9 points, 5.0 assists and 3.3 turnovers in eight games.

Ben Gordon, who averaged a team-high 18.6 points in 2007-08, is expected to play Tuesday after sitting out seven preseason games because of a jammed left big toe.

There will be a familiar face on the opposing team's bench at the United Center in the opener. Skiles coached the Bulls from the midst of the 2003-04 season until he was fired last Christmas Eve, after Chicago struggled to a 9-16 start.

In April, the Bucks hired Skiles to take over a team that went 26-56 last season -- third-worst in the East.
The team he inherits will look noticeably different. Mo Williams, Desmond Mason, Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons are all gone, replaced by forward Richard Jefferson, point guard Luke Ridnour and draft picks Joe Alexander and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.

The newcomers will try to complement guard Michael Redd, the Bucks' scoring leader for five consecutive seasons.

Skiles is known as a defensive-oriented coach, and the Bucks need to improve on that side of the floor. Last season, Milwaukee ranked 23rd in the league in scoring defense (103.9 ppg).

"It's a matter of us all pulling together, believing in his system and working to see how quickly we can get our chemistry right," said Jefferson, who spent his first seven seasons with New Jersey and averaged a career-best 22.6 points in 2007-08.

Redd has averaged 30.6 points in 11 games against Chicago since the start of the 2005-06 season, but the Bucks have gone only 3-9 versus the Bulls during that same stretch.

The Bulls have won five straight home games over the Bucks, and 12 of the last 14 meetings between the teams at the United Center.

Chicago Bulls 2008-2009 Season Preview

Team Name: Chicago Bulls
Last Years: Record: 33-49
Key Losses: Chris Duhon, Scott Skiles
Key Additions: Derrick Rose, Vinny Del Negro, Del Harris, Bernie Bickerstaff

1.What significant moves were made during the offseason? The fortunes of the franchise were changed May 20th, 2008 in the quiet town of Secaucus, New Jersey. That night, amid the Bulls blundering coaching search, the team sent VP of Business Operations Steve Schanwald to attend the draft lottery. The long shot Bulls, with just a 1.9% chance of winning the lottery did just that.

With a renewed sense of hope, the coaching search plodded forward. The Bulls slow danced with retreads Mike D'Antoni and Doug Collins, before finally settling on a bright eyed rookie coach from the Phoenix organization named Vinny Del Negro. Del Negro brings the Bulls an optimistic voice in a locker room that marred by dissension last season. Although a rookie coach, he has surrounded himself with veteran assistants Del Harris and Bernie Bickerstaff.

With the coaching staff in place, the team looked to cash its lottery ticket. The Bulls only worked out two players...Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose. We know how this story turns out, with the first pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, The Chicago Bulls select Derrick Rose.

2.What are the team's biggest strenghts? On first glance, depth would appear to the Bulls greatest strength. With 10 players who could be in the rotation, the Bulls will be able to match up with any set an opponent throws out there. The new coaching is preaching an uptempo offense tailored to the young legs of this team. While this new flashy offense is a work in progress, the Bulls have the young guns to pull this off. The other strength will be the improved play of the point guard position. The Bulls now have a bonafide leader in Derrick Rose, while this is a lot to put on the shoulders of a rookie, I am confident Rose will easily meet this challenge.

3.What are the team's biggest weaknesses? The same depth that contributes to our greatest strength is also the catalyst for our greatest weakness. There is no pecking order on this team. There are 7 players of similar skill level trying to earn minutes on this young roster. No player has established himself as a go to guy nor as a leader of the team. While I expect Derrick Rose to grow into that role as the season progresses, there will be some growing pains initially. The Bulls are also learning a new system from coach Del Negro, so the chemistry will take some time to develop. Lastly, the Bulls are the youngest team in the NBA. They will make some mistakes along the way. While the team is not necessarily rebuilding, they are certainly retooling.

4.What are the goals for this team? The Bulls goals should be simple, come out and compete every night. To a man, everyone in the locker room feels that last season was an anomaly and hopes to prove it this season. The Bulls should have some struggles early in the season, both with a tough schedule and the growing pains of a new coaching staff. Ultimately, the goal will be improvement from one month to the next. This team will not be the same in March as it is in November.

5.So what is this team? The 49-win team of '06-'07, or the team that won 16 fewer games the season afterwards? While there are still players on this roster from '06-'07, this team is decidedly different. The coaching staff has changed and malcontents in the locker room have been traded. This Bulls team is better than last season's disappointment, but will not have the pressure and expectations of from two years ago. The best answer to this question is this Bulls team is neither of its predecessors. Too many of the variables have changed. The Bulls improve upon last season, but will not be close to the success of the year before.

T-Cobb's Predicted Record 40-42.

Chicago Bulls Starting Five: Who Will it Be?

The Bulls enter this season with essentially the same roster from last season's debacle. Well, there is one notable difference. With the first pick in the NBA draft, the Bulls selected point guard Derrick Rose. While the team tries to temper expectations of the young player, there is little doubt that this will soon be his team.

The Bulls starting lineup to open the season is anything but set. Training camp and the preseason were marred with injuries, with at least 11 players suffering some ailment. First year coach Vinny Del Negro will have a tough assignment doling out minutes on roster with at least 10 players fighting for playing time. When the Bulls opened camp one month ago, there was only starting position that was set with Luol Deng at the small forward. Let's look at the team position by position.

Point Guard - The battle for the point guard position is essentially a two man race. Well, that is to say, was a two man race. While the Bulls management preached patience with Derrick Rose, he came into camp and won this job. Kirk Hinrich will get minutes at this position, but this race was over very quickly. Derrick Rose is the future and the future begins now.

Shooting Guard - There are at least four players who would like to have a shot starting in the backcourt next to Rose. Kirk Hinrich was getting some early minutes in camp, but played poorly in this role. Larry Hughes was his usual bad self, while getting praised by the staff and media. He dislocated his shoulder, so he will not be playing for at least the first week of the season. Ben Gordon missed nearly all of camp with a injured big toe. Offensively, it would make the most sense to play the dynamic Gordon next Rose, but it has been reported that he will continue his 6th man role. Thabo Sefolosha was my early favorite to win the starting job, but he played poorly throughout most of the preseason, unable to knock down open shots. This position will be one of Del Negro's toughest tasks for the season. I expect Hinrich to be the opening night starter, but that will certainly change as the season ebbs and flows.

Small Forward - The Bulls signed Luol Deng to the richest contract in franchise history over the summer to be the starting small forward. While he has struggled to make an impact in the preseason, he is almost certainly a lock to start here on opening night. Andres Nocioni played very well alongside Rose and will get minutes both at small forward and power forward. Thabo Sefolosha will also get backup minutes here.

Power Forward - Tyrus Thomas entered camp with a renewed sense of purpose and professionalism. Tyrus was making good basketball decisions, shooting when open and rebounding everything he could get to...his best preseason to date. He hurt his ankle late in camp, and that may have cost him the job. Andres Nocioni can fill in off the bench in small lineups, but Del Negro will not start him. Drew Gooden was reasonably effective last season as the PF, but has played much of the preseason out of position at center. KC Johnson considers Gooden a lock to start, but its not clear if he will be the starting center or power forward.

Center - Drew Gooden started much of the preseason as an undersized center, due primarily to the injuries to Joakim Noah and Aaron Gray. Gooden is a decent offensive player, but gets punished on the defensive end of the floor. Joakim Noah looks like the same player as last season, getting ugly buckets and out-hustling his competition. Aaron Gray is the most fundamentally sound of our big men.. He has just enough moves in the post to score, while makes good decisions defensively and holds his position well. Gray is my dark horse selection as the starting center.

To recap, I expect the opening day line-up will look something like this...

PG-Derrick Rose
SG-Kirk Hinrich
SF-Luol Deng
PF-Drew Gooden
C-Aaron Gray

Bench
Tyrus Thomas
Andres Nocioni
Ben Gordon
Joakim Noah
Thabo Sefolosha

While it pains me to see Tyrus Thomas relegated to bench duty, I think this will be the direction the coaching staff goes for opening night. I do not think this will be the lineup for the entire season, as I expect Thomas and Noah to be starting by season's end. Coach Del Negro stressed this is a work in progress. Indeed.
